Alternative Help for Depression

Antoaneta Sawyer, Ph.D.

During my over 25 years of clinical practice as an MD and ND, I have found that symptoms of long-term depression combined with (or without) anxiety or/and panic disorder, can be influenced by reaching complete remission proportions by simply using the correct amount of amino acid supplementation. As part of our alternative therapy protocol, one must know that eight of the amino acids are known as essential - so they are indispensable as cannot be synthesized de novo (anew) by the human organism. Therefore they must be added (replaced or supplied) in your diet. These essential amino acids are: Leucine, Isoleucine, Lysine, Methionine, Phenylalanine, Threonine, Tryptophan, and Valine. Additionally, Cysteine, Tyrosine, Histidine and Arginine are essentially required by infants and growing children. Furthermore the amino acids: Arginine, Cysteine, Glycine, Glutamine, Histidine, Proline, Serine and Tyrosine are considered conditionally essential, meaning they are not normally required in the diet, but must be supplied additionally to the diet of specific populations that do not synthesize these in adequate amounts.
The distinction between essential and non-essential amino acids is somewhat unclear, as some amino acids are produced from others. The sulpfur
-containing amino acids, methionine and homocysteine, can be converted into each other but neither can be synthesized de novo in humans. Likewise, cysteine can be made from homocysteine but cannot be synthesized on its own. So, for convenience, sulfur-containing amino acids are sometimes considered a single pool of nutritionally-equivalent amino acids as are the aromatic amino acid pair, phenylalanine and tyrosine. Likewise Arginine, Ornitine, and Citrulline, which are interconvertible by the urea cycle, are considered a single group.
With advanced aging we are starting to experience the consequences of a poor digestion, malabsorption, first-pass liver filtration and low absorption due to missing intrinsic factor production or a naturally occurring hypochlorhydria (low levels of HCL secretion in the stomach). Above all, a major part of our poppulation is using some daily anti-acid as (H2 blockers or proton pump inhibitors) that is consequently neutralizing the small amount of HCL, still secreted by your body.
The eight essential amino acids must be combined in an equation corresponding to your personal needs, as some may miss one, while other may miss most of them. In other words you will require an individualized amino acid supplementation program as per your personal needs. There is a blood test that can be performed in order for your holistic provider to make sure you will supply the right amount or blend of amino acids missing from your body. I can guarantee that you will not only feel better within few weeks, but your depression will disappear for good. In fact you may already question yourself how all these prescription anti-depressives are working and what is behind their mechanism of action that can make you feel better in a short of a long run. You can find that their mechanism is pretty simple-as they are working as mood regulators by influencing quantitively the amount of neurotransmitters in your brain. They are also known under the common term “selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors”(SSRI).
The above information is offered to you in order to find a good holistic doctor (ND) who is well versed with the above “anti-depressive” strategy and to use all his/her knowledge and intuition in modulating the problem. Do not forget that the above amino acids addition will neither leave you hungry or drained of energy. There will not be observed the dreadful and damaging side effects faced after the SSRI use either.
Finally, you will not complain of anxiety as a consequence of a long term use of the anti-depressive medications, or of a low libido, impotence, nausea, sleeplessness, paradoxically decreased appetite, followed by a considerable weight gain after ceasing the medications, etc. and etc. Some doctors call the group of SSRI drugs a quick and necessary “band aid,” while I name them with the term “unnecessary evil.” Weaning off them is also quite a challenge.
In case after a good amino acids supplementation you still feel like you are missing something- you can consider adding a good vitamin B50-100 formula, vitamin B12 injections, trace minerals, and adaptogenic herbs. I have seen wonderful results by simply adding a good Green Food formula, as for example (Green Magma, Spirulina, Chlorella, Boku superfood, Nano Greens, New Chapter Berry Greens, and Hawaiian Spirulina) to the diet of my patients.
